Dry Needling
Using very fine acupuncture needles into myofascial and nerve points, dry needling can be an effective way of relieving muscle tightness and musculoskeletal pain. Called “dry needling” as the needles are not tubes and nothing is injected, as when a doctor may inject medicines. Therapists who perform needling have done specific training on how to use dry needling. Can be a great way to manage tightness and pain during sports season as well as to treat new injuries.
Differs from traditional acupuncture by chose of points to needle, even though the needles themselves are all “acupuncture needles”. Acupuncture uses a traditional model of Chi and energy points all over the body relating to different disorders. Many dry needling points may look similar but are not underpinned by traditional Chinese Medicine philosophies. They just happen to be over nerve points and muscle trigger points.
