Sports Physiotherapy
Sports Physiotherapy today is a specialised branch of physiotherapy that relates to the assessment, intervention/management of sports people and in particular sports injuries.
While most people are not elite athletes, many participate in sports activities that may lead to various injuries. A skilled sports physiotherapist not only understands how to assess and treat the common types of pain and injuries we see but also how to analyse movement and technique of an individual. In particular, how to amend a training schedule while doing treatment and rehabilitation and minimising time out of sport is one of the hallmarks of expert care. Also prevention of injury and re-injury via accurate and correct exercise prescription as well as modification of as many contributing factors as possible separates Sports Physiotherapy for simple treatment.
The Australian Physiotherapy Association does recognise physios who have followed the Titling Pathway as Titled Sports Physiotherapists, of which Steve Royes is one. Steve has experience in community sports for 20 years as well as at the elite level in AFL. Steve has also completed the APA Level 3 Sports Course at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra as well as having travelled to the USA to learn at the Steadman-Philippon Institute and Howard Head Sports Medicine Center in Vail, Colorado.
We also have Redmond O’Mahony who has a Sports Science Masters focusing on triathletes as well as his experience in Irish Rugby. Whilst Redmond has not followed the Titling pathway (as he was not trained locally), he is very much an excellent physiotherapist for sports injuries and has a track record to prove it.
